Artist Biography

Louis Hennepin was born in Ath, in what is present day Belgium, in 1626. He was one of four missionaries sent by Louis the XIV to the colony of New France in 1675.

Accompanying René Robert Cavelier on his first voyage through western New France, Hennepin was the first European to give a visual rendering of many sights he saw on their journey.

He continued with the exploration party into the unknown west, travelling all the way to the Mississippi River.

Eventually Hennepin returned to Europe where he died in 1705.
