Artist Biography
The Artist Tom Thomson was born in Claremont, Ontario, in 1877. After working a series of jobs in southern Ontario, he travelled to Seattle in 1901 to live and work with some of his brothers.
In 1902, he found a job as a pen artist and engraver. Soon he moved to Toronto and in 1905 he got another job, this time as a photoengraver. The following year he took night classes, learning drawing and basic art principles.
In 1911, after meeting a few soon to be members of the Group of Seven, he began making trips into the central Ontario wilderness to paint. In 1913, Thomson decided to paint full time. In that same year his work had its inaugural exhibition.
Thomson continued to paint, travel and exhibit with many close friends, including Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson and Franklin Carmichael.
Tragically, Thomson mysteriously died on Canoe Lake in 1917.
