Artist Biography

Christopher Pratt was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, in 1935.

In the mid-1940s, Pratt began to make trips around southwest Newfoundland with his father. These trips planted the seeds for his future work.

From 1957 to 1961, Pratt pursued an arts education at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick and in Glasgow. When not in school, he worked summer jobs at various industries around Newfoundland, while sketching and exploring the places and structures that would constitute his future work.

In 1961, Pratt broke into the art world with the jury selection of his second serigraph Boat in the Sandfor the National Gallery of Canada’s fourth Biennial Exhibition. In 1985, the Vancouver Art Gallery mounted his first retrospective show, which toured nationally.

Today, Pratt’s work is widely exhibited nationally and internationally and he remains one of Canada’s leading senior artists, demonstrating ongoing artistic relevance.
