Geologist Biography
Dr. John Douglas (Jack) Mollard was an internationally recognized pioneer and leader in the use of airphotos and satellite images to interpret and evaluate Earth’s physical geography, geo-environments, natural resources and infrastructures. He had over 60 years of experience working on projects located in Canada and other parts of the world –and even Mars.
Jack Mollard was born on January 3, 1924 near Watrous, Saskatchewan. He obtained a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1945, a Masters degree in civil engineering from Purdue University in 1947, and a Ph.D. degree from Cornell University in 1952. Jack’s experience in southwestern Saskatchewan – the setting of Illingworth Kerr’s painting of the Ross ranch – began in 1943 when as a summer student he was part of a survey crew for the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA). He returned to that part of Saskatchewan between 1947 and 1955, still with the PFRA.
In 1956, Jack formed his own consulting company, J.D. Mollard and Associates Ltd. In addition to over 5000 consulting projects that Jack and his firm have carried out during his lifetime, he alsos published two textbooks, over 100 technical papers and presented more than 80 workshops and short courses. He is the recipient of many honours and awards, including the Officer of the Order of Canada for pioneering applied multidisciplinary airphoto terrain analysis studies, the Massey Medal for achievements in mapping the geography of Canada, the Julian C. Smith Medal for achievements in the development of Canada, and the Sir John Kennedy Medal for contributions to the science of engineering.
